Subsea Cables
There are various types of cables for subsea application. These include dedicated power transmission cables, dedicated communications cables, sensor cables and composite umbilicals for bespoke application.
Power Transmission
Subsea Power Transmission cables are typically used for the following applications:
• Renewable Energies
- Offshore Windfarms
- Tidal Power
- Wave-energy Converter Farms
• Offshore Oil and Gas Industry
• Island connections and lake crossings, also for long distances
Power transmission cables come in a variety of sizes for single or three-phase systems with a voltage range of 0.6/1kV to 500kV.
Typically, subsea power transmission cables differ to onshore power cables due to the inclusion of water blocking compounds, single layer and concentric armouring and the use of PolyEthylene and Polyurethane as sheathing compounds..
Fibre Optic Communications Cables
Subsea fibre cables require extra protection compared to standard fibre cables. Extra protection is provided through a steel or copper tube around the fibres, steel wire armour and polyurethane outer sheath for harsh applications, when high mechanical and abrasion resistance is required
Composite Umbilical's
Composite umbilicals can be implemented for a variety of applications both subsea and topside. These can range from Subsea Production Umbilicals (SPU's) used to tieback subsea trees to fixed platforms, FPSO's and land based facilities through to small ROV cables with simple power, control, signal and communication functions.
Typically composite umbilicals include the following attributes...
- Power cables
- Signal Cables
- Communication, Coaxial or fibre optic
- Pneumatic hoses
- Hydraulic hoses
