Syria has taken a significant step toward rebuilding and modernizing its communications network with the signing of an agreement to land the country’s first international submarine cable at the Tartous station. The project, titled ‘Connecting Continents,’ was announced by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and marks the beginning of a new phase in the restoration of Syria’s digital infrastructure.
The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdel Salam Heikal, and Norman Albi, representing the Spanish company, Medusa. The initiative aims to reconnect Syria to international data networks through submarine cable infrastructure linking Asia and Europe, boosting the country’s capacity for global data exchange.

According to MCIT, the project is expected to improve internet speeds, reduce latency, and reinforce digital infrastructure for both the public and private sectors. It will also support the development of digital services, telecommunications, and e-commerce, positioning Syria as a regional hub for internet connectivity and digital traffic.
Minister Heikal visited the port of Tartous to inspect the cable landing site, accompanied by local officials and dignitaries. During the visit, he highlighted the importance of the project in advancing the ministry’s vision of transforming Syria into a regional center for internet traffic and providing a technological environment that supports economic and digital growth.

Once operational, the submarine cable is expected to serve as a critical backbone for Syria’s digital future, enabling more reliable data exchange with global networks and enhancing opportunities for innovation, investment, and technological cooperation. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to restore national infrastructure, encourage digital entrepreneurship, and integrate Syria more closely into regional and international communication systems.
