Valencia Digital Port Connect to Build Submarine Cable Hub

VDPC

Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC) has announced plans to establish a submarine cable landing station (CLS) and a multipurpose data center in Sagunto, marking a significant milestone for digital infrastructure in southern Europe. The project, Barracuda, is being developed in partnership with private equity firm, Teset Capital, and represents a EUR 100 million investment.

The Barracuda cable will be the first direct submarine connection between Spain and Italy, spanning 1,070 kilometers across the Mediterranean Sea between Sagunto and Genoa. The system will include 12 fiber pairs with a capacity of 32 terabits per second (Tbps) per fiber, offering high-speed, low-latency connectivity between key data center hubs in Madrid and Milan.

The cable landing station and data center will be housed in a 4,600-square-meter facility strategically located to ensure rapid interconnection with existing terrestrial networks. The infrastructure is designed to be neutral and open access, capable of hosting up to four submarine cable systems and interconnecting with major fiber routes.

The data center will have four computing rooms, accommodating over 400 racks. Its initial electrical capacity will be 10 megawatts, and it will meet high standards for availability, scalability, and energy efficiency. The facility will be powered by a 250-kilowatt rooftop solar photovoltaic system, supporting a 100% sustainable energy model.

VDPC has also signed a framework agreement with Axent Infraestructuras de Telecomunicaciones to interconnect their networks and develop infrastructure projects jointly. The collaboration aims to enhance national and international connectivity through integrated solutions leveraging Axent’s domestic fiber reach and VDPC’s global links.

Construction of the Barracuda system is expected to be completed within three years, with commercial operations slated to begin in early 2028.
